Candyman, Candyman, Candyman...

Candyman is my all-time favorite horror movie. Made in 1992 and set right here in Chicago, it is the story of what happens when an urban legend becomes reality. It stars Virginia Madsen, a hometown girl. Watch it and then I dare you to stand in front of your bathroom mirror and utter his name three times. My husband knew this one actually spooked me and would walk up to me when I was brushing my teeth at night and start saying his name. Creep. Thanks for the fun idea, Splotchy!

Excellent! I love this movie. I think my eldest met him. At a convention, not when he came bursting through the mirror.

i love coincidences: not two minutes ago i got done haranguing friends via e-mail about "burnt offerings," my favorite horror movie and, i feel, a closet classic. i hate horror movies -- i just get too scared -- and so this is the last one i've ever seen, when i was 13. but today i appreciate it from the safe distance of decades, and damn i remember a lot of the details:

betty davis in her final role, looking, aptly, like death warmed over. the freakily hot karen black, eyes akimbo. oliver reed, all writerly angst. burgess god-love-him meredith as the owner of the rental mansion that has played host to a long series of tragic families summer after summer.

that movie has everything -- gothic madness, gore, sex. actually not much sex. but i saw it when i was 13 and when oliver reed gave karen black's ample bosom a squeeze out on the grass, i thought, gratefully, "oh, that's how it's done." so it's a sexual primer, too.

anyone seen it?
